CHOPPED

A rural adventure took me and my co-pilot to the small town of Davenport, Nebraska; population 289. Our mission was to meet with an entrepreneur who is utilizing food in order to “bring economic and social self-reliance to a community in rural Nebraska”. Sounds fantastic, right?

We ended up leaving with much more than a story. Our basket was overflowing as we left SOUTH MAPLE STREET with gorgeous artisan food products made right here in our great state…

The story about this business is still in the works and will be featured on the NEBRASKA RURAL LIVING website soon. Until then, we need help figuring out what we can create with these amazing ingredients. Culinary endeavors will be documented for this story.

As a result, I was inspired by the Food Network show CHOPPED. In case you are not familiar with this program, four chefs compete to create a three course meal with the unusually paired items included in a basket of ingredients. Three rounds are broken down into “Appetizer”, “Entree”, and “Dessert” and each round eliminates a contestant.

So blog readers…THIS is your challenge: Tell me what YOU would do with these ingredients…

This is quite the rural challenge!

So…here is a recap of the ingredients we have to work with in order to make a three course meal:

GARDEN PASTA SAUCE

PICKLED GREEN BEANS

PICKLED BEETS

SWEET PEPPER RELISH

DRIED CRUSHED CHIPOTLE PEPPER

SPINACH AND ARTICHOKE CHEESE

BEER CHEESE

SUN DRIED TOMATO CHIPS

FETTUCCINE

“EVERYTHING” CRACKERS

What would you create with these ingredients? Remember that ALL of these items need to be included in a three course meal and you can utilize any ingredients from your own fridge and pantry to make this meal come to life!

Be CREATIVE!

    First course idea:

Wolff meats summer sausage in Eustis
pickled green beans and pickled beets
    crackers
    cheese
    Caleb Pollards crafted beer

2nd course is on shaky terrain. I read in Walleye and Cherry Pie book about tamales sold on the street in Chicago. The tamales were filled with cherry jam, shredded chicken and other equally unusual flavor combinations. What about tamales filled with shredded chicken and a teaspoon of salsa?

    dessert

chocolate ice cream and chili powder
